Position Paper: The Role of Peer Support in Multiple Pregnancy Complications and Loss

At TAPS Support and Footprints Baby Loss, we are committed to the role of peer support in helping families navigate the unique and complex challenges of multiple pregnancies, particularly when complications or loss occur.

Peer support offers a crucial connection for families, allowing them to share their experiences with others who truly understand. This shared lived experience provides comfort, practical guidance, and emotional validation that complements medical care and counselling.

Position Statement

Footprints Baby Loss and TAPS Support are committed to the role of peer support in helping families navigate the complex challenges of multiple pregnancies, particularly when complications or loss occur.

Peer support connects families with others who have shared similar experiences, offering comfort, understanding, and practical guidance that complements medical care and counselling. This type of support provides ongoing reassurance and a sense of community, reducing feelings of isolation and empowering parents to face their unique circumstances with strength and resilience. It is an essential resource that helps families feel seen, supported, and better equipped to manage both emotional and practical challenges.

We encourage healthcare providers, organizations, and the wider community to guide families toward trusted, evidence-based peer support networks, and consider peer support as a trusted, effective resource to help families navigate complex journeys with resilience and understanding. By fostering these connections, we can ensure that every family navigating the difficulties of multiple pregnancies has access to meaningful, compassionate support when they need it most.

Shared decision-making is a vital part of managing monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies, where quick decisions and complex risks are common. It encourages collaboration between parents and healthcare providers, ensuring care aligns with families’ values and preferences. This approach builds trust and helps parents feel more involved in their care, which can improve outcomes. Shared decision making complements the role of peer support in treatments.
